Mirror Noir

The objective for this project was to create a fictional album cover for an artist of our choosing. I chose Cate Le Bon as a result of my undying obsession with her music and personality. Establishing the album name “Mirror Noir” and theme, the problem to solve was to communicate these ideas to the audience in a way that was stylized but nuanced, like her music. I went for a typographic approach that melded symmetry with organic movement.

I went through a few different iterations of the cover before landing on my final design. My exploration of type using a scanner and manipulating it in real time to get the exact movement of the letters I wanted is the part I am most proud of. Some of my heroes and inspirations experiment out of the box to find solutions that stand out, but look easy. The challenging part was taking the idea of utilizing type and finding the right home for it.

I feel my design addresses the theme of her supernatural artistry, in that she writes music like a sorceress, entrancing listeners with every breath. The design is both literal and figurative, mimicking a mirror, while allowing mystery or noir to encapsulate the viewer. I feel the simplicity of a three-color palette allows the composition to breathe and let the audience lose themselves in the cover.
