Tidepools

Tidepools is annual publication put out by MiraCosta College highlighting art, poetry, essays and fiction by students, staff and faculty. The goals for this huge project were to layout and organize a cohesive design that brought together all of the contributor's submissions in a way that was both visually engaging and digestively organized.

The challenge of taking the client's idea of transformation and reemergence and distilling it down to a visual feeling in my design process taught me more about my instincts than any other project I'd worked on before. After trying my hand at three different compositions, the one that spoke to everyone, including the client was the most minimalist. I took elements of a map integrated with background gradients and an ellipse to create a scene that emulated a rising change, a gleamful hope through the darkness of the past few years.

This experience was the most exhaustive and collaborative process I have ever been a part of. I learned to work diligently within a team of many, who all took their sections' inspiration from my collage-inspired cover image, which was bewildering to see manipulated, morphed and distilled even further. Under the watchful eye of Professor Min Choi, we revised and made adjustments weekly, taking all the pieces of the publication and creating a perfectly aligned publication that highlighted the work done by both the contributors and the designers. Learning where and when to pull back was definitely one of the biggest challenges. My team, which included myself, Ashley Bliss, Luna Crabb, Kirsten Francis were responsible for the Cover/Special Thanks/Table of Contents/Index portions.
